Street ArtThe challenge; incorporating art into the urban environment. It's trickier than it seems. Street art should be more than just tagging a sign or wheatpasting a wall. The art should become part of space, not just sitting in it.Reading Monster is one of my first large scale successes and it happened almost be chance. I had been working on several large scale installations, based on successful sketches, to display during a downtown Arts Festival. As a last minute, spontaneous idea, I threw together this monster with some remaining materials. |

To my surprise, this was the only piece that truly worked. Although I had worked to recreate the installations from my sketches, I had failed to take into consideration how they would become a part of the landscape.
In the end the other pieces seemed clunky and in the way, while Reading Monster blended in with the surroundings, becoming as much apart of the street as the bench, the signs and the sidewalk. |

The Pole GalleryThe Pole Gallery originated after teaching a lesson on street art, and in particular, hitchhikers, to my art history class. The idea has several appealing factors.First, your adding art to the street, making it part of the street. Second, the art is for everyone, not only for a select few gallery visitors. Third, it is art by everyone, not only a few "select" artist. |

| Mammoth was based on a sketch I drew back in January 08. Though I'm sure Mammoth, which I worked so hard on, would make an excellent gallery piece, it doesn't make for great street art. Ok, so art and learn. |
